<Box Art Coming Soon>

During my last quarter of College (Oct-Dec 2002), I took "Wars of the 20th Century."

          Anyway as our final project we have to do something related to Wars of the 20th Century.  As I was doing some kits at the time I decided to do a tank model.  I did an M26 Pershing Tank.  To help my grade I decided instead of placing it on a simple stand to place it on a diorama based on later World War II (in which this tank was first used).

Step One

     I put together the Barricade Set.  The built into six metal tank barricades and three wood tank barricades.

     I painted them and made the metal ones look rusted.  For the wooden ones I used a antural brown and for the metal ones I used a metalic grey.  A real no brainer, then I sed some red orange on the grey ones to mimic rust.

Step Two

     I bought a 16" x 20" pastel board and covered it with one of those cheap white snow skirts (thankfully it was Christmas time).

     I used some mailing tape to fasten the skirt to the underside. Sadly the snow skirt was no as efective as I hoped.  The ones I have back home are much thicker, but you can't find those any more.  Which is why I didn't use it on his.

Step Three

    For such a large city, Chicago has very few hobby stores.  I had to stop by Pearl (a very expensive art store).  I thought "surely store THIS big would have snow", unfortunately I was wrong.  I sales girl suggested I use crystal glitter to mimic snow.  She said to mix these two different types (matte and glossy) to do that.  I took her advice and got five good sized bottles

     I did not want to use that cheap snow stuff you get at Walgreens or Wal*Mart.

     I poured the "snow" onto the base and used spray mount to hold it on.  I worked with mixed success.  I would have preferred to use hobby snow, but them's the breaks.  I didn't have the time or transportation to go to Joilet

     As you see I already placed the metal barricades in the snow.

Step Four

     I then placed the wood barricades behind the metal ones and strung thread through the wood barricades to simulate barb wire.

     Then I patted the model on part of the base to mimic tracks, then I pushed the model into the snow to show the tank nowing through the snow.
