Moments after an atomic bomb falls over Hiroshima, a secret Japanese submarine sails into battle against its American counterpart, and both are lost to history. Some fifty years later, the long-lost sub astonishingly reappears, as a mysterious black cylinder threatens a special UN task force sent to investigate unusual phenomena in Antarctica.
However, the incident in the Antarctic is only the first round in a cataclysmic battle of wills between two descendants of an ancient race dwelling within the Earth. Standing against them is a single, amazing ship - the RA, a Yamato-class battle sub secretly rebuilt after its supposed destruction in World War II.
Review:
Amazon.com described this as "Jules Verne meets Leiji Matsumoto" and they were right.  This is what "Big Wars" should have been.....good.  First an interesting back note this anime was orginally a Toho (the Godzilla company) live action movie in the early 1960's.  The name "Atragon" (which shows up nowhwere in the movie) is from the English translated version shown in the US in the mid 60's.  Even if this is anime this movie has a real Toho fell to it.
Overall, a great story that really stikes a chord with the audience.  The only bad thing is that it leaves you hanging (just like an old Toho movie) they plan to go to center of the earth and it just ends there.  A great movie that should be on the big screen here in the states.
