Review:
When doing research for the movie info, I found that this was made in 1984,
which was a major shock to me. The movie it looks like it could have
been made recently. Sadly, I haven't seen that much recent anime that has
as good of animation as this nearly twenty year old movie. Something
to think about.
Anyway a simply great movie, minor rants are the same as any movie version
of a TV or OAV characters not as developed, things happening in different
order, some parts taken out. But again minor stuff. I though
the short part with Max and Millia was nice, but sadly their characters
were really shifted down and no marriage during the movie. Much of
the romance in the story was confined to the classic love triangle of Hikaru,
Minmei, and Misa.
Overall, the story is basically the same as roughly the fourth to the thirtieth
episode of the TV series. The only problem is the back story and
how the SDF-1 got out to space is not there. The movie is somewhat
more graphic with the violence than the TV show, but not more than Cowboy
Bebop.
An interesting story about the movies it that is a movie with in a movie,
kind of like a movie about the war made twenty years later, which leads
to all of the changes. But, if you want to introduce someone to Macross
this is a good quick springboard. Even if you have seen the
TV series you will be surprised on how good this is.
Avoid the dubbed/edited "Clash of the Bionoids" version like the plague. |
