Chiyoko Fujiwara was once a major movie star who dominated the Japanese cinema world. Thirty years ago, she abruptly disappeared from the screen and public view.
One of her greatest admirers, Genya Tachibana, is a documentary filmmaker who has traveled to the isolated mountain lodge where she makes her home to interview her. There, he presents her with an old key, and as if they key had opened a door to her memories, Chiyoko starts telling the story of her life, interweaving moments from her past and future and passing through the boundary between reality and the movies that had made up so much of her life.
Review:
When picking up this movie I would, suggest picking up a gross or two of tissues.  You'll need it.   The classic bit about movie reviewing is "I laughed, I cried.....".   This is I believe the first movie that has done both very well in the same movie.
The flash backs are handled in perfectly with muted colors almost black and white, but with the occasional bright colors.  Then at times you see her walking thought pictures with is really cool, and the movie shows parts of her life that mirror her movies by showing the movie.  Of course, the whole time Genya and Otaki are following her filming her memories, and occasionally Genya taking a role himself.   I wish I could explain this better but the movie is so unlike anything I've ever seen before it defies description.   At times the movie can make you laugh and them it makes you cry, the ending is a real tearjerker.
Overall, If you are still reading this get up and run to your local store and buy this movie, this belongs in everyone's' movie collection.  What are you waiting for go.......NOW!
